New Book: Next Year in the White House: Barack Obama’s First Presidential Seder
On August 10, from 4:00-5:30 pm, the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association and the Cousen Rose Gallery will host a panel discussion and reception at the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard in Oak Bluffs. The event will celebrate the new non-fiction children’s book Next Year in the White House: Barack Obama’s First Presidential Seder.
This book was written by Richard Michelson and illustrated by E.B. Lewis to depict the story of the impromptu Passover seder held on then-Senator Obama’s 2008 campaign trail. Which then continued into his presidency, leading to the first-ever White House seder hosted by a sitting president.
This event brings together a variety of honorable speakers. Including:
- Valerie Jarrett: Chief Executive Officer and member of the board of directors of The Obama Foundation
- Eric Lesser: former Obama staffer and MA state senator
- E.B. Lewis: Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator
- Richard Michelson: Author, National Jewish Book Award winner, MVCMA resident (MV Polar Bear)
Next Year in the White House has already gained national interest and reviews:
- The Washington Post said, “offers an intimate glimpse of a significant moment of interfaith dialogue.”
- The Kirkus Review said, “a vision for a more inclusive America… Essential reading for all children–and adults—who hope for freedom for all.”
- The Booklist said, “the descendants of two enslaved peoples come together to share a meal and celebrate their historical liberation.. It’s about the family you have and the family you make.”
We hope you will join us for this celebration within the community. This event is free and open to all.
